The Decksmith

Pergola Builders in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs

I design and build pergolas across Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs. Freestanding or attached to the house. Open rafters, or a roof if you want shade and weather cover.

Most frames are hardwood. Aluminium is the other option. On the roof I use standard polycarbonate, EzGlaze, insulated panels (typically Versiclad), or a Pergolux kit where that is the right fit. I measure it on site, I draw it, and I build it.

Doing this in Sydney’s East and surrounds for 13+ years. The person at the consultation is the person on the tools.

What I build

Open pergolas

Rafters only. No sheets. Shade from the timber, light through the gaps, room for a climber if you want one. This is the cleanest structure of the lot, and it is often the right call over a deck or a courtyard that already gets enough weather cover from the house.

Polycarbonate pergolas

A standard polycarbonate roof on a timber or aluminium frame. Light comes through. Rain does not. I use this when you want a usable outdoor table without turning the space into a closed room.

EzGlaze pergolas

EzGlaze is the thicker polycarbonate sheet. It spans further and reads cleaner overhead. The Mascot rooftop I rebuilt has EzGlaze over 7.2 metre clear spans, no mid-span posts, every sheet hauled up by hand. That is the one to look at if you want this roof.

Insulated roof pergolas

Insulated panels, typically Versiclad, when you want a solid roof and less heat through it. The Coogee outdoor kitchen sits under insulated panel roofing: barbecue, fridge and sink in the shade, view left open. I will name Versiclad on a job when that is the panel I am using.

Pergolux kits

I build custom pergolas, and I also supply and install kits, including premium kits such as Pergolux. The kit is the right job when it matches the space. I have a finished Pergolux project I can show you.

ZipScreens

I install ZipScreens. Fitted to the pergola so you can shut out wind, rain or the afternoon sun without building a room.

Timber or aluminium

Hardwood posts and beams are what I use on most pergolas. They sit well against a timber deck and against older Eastern Suburbs houses.

Aluminium is the other frame. Cleaner lines, less movement, and it is often the better match to a composite deck or a tighter modern house. I will tell you which one I would use on your site.

How I build one

A consultation at your place. I look at the span, the fixings back to the house or the footings, sun, and how you actually want to use the space. Then I write a fixed price and a full scope.

I build it myself. Footings or connections, frame, roof, flashings, and the last fix.

Work I can show you

These are live jobs. The pergola is part of a larger outdoor build on each of them.

  • Mascot rooftop — EzGlaze, 7.2 m clear spans.
  • Coogee — outdoor kitchen under insulated panel roofing.
  • Bronte — pergola over the bin bay, stainless cables, creepers.
  • Little Bay — spotted gum deck and pergola.
  • Kingsford — WoodEvo pool deck and pergola.

What a pergola costs in Sydney, and whether to build the deck or the pergola first, are in How Much Does a Pergola Cost in Sydney and Deck vs Pergola.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of pergola do you build?

Custom builds and kits. Open (rafters only), standard polycarbonate, EzGlaze, insulated panels (typically Versiclad), and premium kits such as Pergolux. Frames in timber or aluminium. I install ZipScreens on the pergola where you want the sides closed in. I will tell you which combination I would use on your site.

Do you build pergolas in Vaucluse and Dover Heights?

Yes. Vaucluse, Dover Heights and the rest of the Eastern Suburbs list above. Exposed and harbourside sites are normal work, not a special trip.

What’s involved?

A consultation on site. I measure, check the structure, and write a fixed price. Then I build it, from the footings or the house connection through to the roof and the last fix.

Can the pergola attach to an existing deck?

Yes, attached or freestanding. On a lot of jobs the pergola goes on a deck I have already built, or it goes up with the deck in the same scope.
